There are few things more annoying than calls from collection agencies. They hound you and harass you without any care for you or your situation. But there is a way to get the people you owe on your side and get yourself out of debt.

If you’ve been getting collection calls, you’ve probably figured out that dealing with the company you owe is a who lot easier that dealing with the debt collectors. And if you agree, there’s good news. In many cases, there’s no need to deal with the collection agencies. Depending on how your debt is being handled, you may be able to call the company and work with them directly. And they’re usually going to be a whole lot nicer and easier to deal with.

Sometimes, debt collection agencies will buy your debt from your debtor. In this case, you’ll have to work with the collection agency.

Often the agency will collect for the company you owe money and then take a portion of what they collect as their fee. If this is the case, you can still work with the original company. In fact, they would prefer you work with them because then they don’t have to pay a fee to the collection agency.

In a third case, collection agencies will go “fishing”. They will call loan companies and ask if anyone is behind on payments. They will then call these people trying to collect money, even though you haven’t actually been sent to collections. In this case, dealing with the original loan agency is by far the better option.

So how to you tell the difference? Don’t ask the collection agency. In most cases, they don’t actually know or may even lie about it. Call your loan company directly. If they are still legally allowed to work with you, they will.

So, you’ve gotten a hold of your credit card or loan company and they’re just not budging on how much you should pay or even your interest rates, what do you do now? There are several options you can look to for help. Debt managers will take your payment and use it to pay the money you owe. In many cases, they will also work out lower debts or interest payments. You can also go to a debt negotiator who will go to the people you owe and work out a decreased debt amount for you.

If you don’t want to go through a third party, there is a method to negotiate your debt on your own. This, like working with a debt negotiator, is only advisable if you cannot pay your bills and desperately need to find an option. If your credit card company won’t take less money, don’t give them any. Take what you’re able to pay them and put it in a savings account.

After a few bills and some harassing calls, call your credit card company again. If they think they might not get any money at all, they’re much more likely to deal. Once you get what you want, then you can give them the money you’ve been stocking away. While this will adversely affect your credit score, it is not as detrimental as declaring bankruptcy.

If you’ve willing to work on it and put in some time, there are options for working with debt collectors to get yourself out of trouble.

From when you wake up in the morning, to when you go to sleep at night, you are overloaded with hundreds of advertisements, flashy products, and other more subtle marketing techniques. When you’re trying to live on a budget, these things are your enemy.

Here are some tips to avoid the urge to overspend.

Make a list. And stick to it. Many times when we intend to make a shopping list, we end up getting in a rush and running out the door. And we also end up buying a lot of stuff we didn’t intend to and probably don’t need. The easiest way to write a list is to keep a notepad in your house and write and item down when you run out or realize you need it. Then, when you get to the store, only buy what’s on the list. If you want to try new things, search for freebies online to find out if you need it without paying for it.

Never shop hungry?or sad, or angry. We’ve all heard that you shouldn’t shop hungry. And if you’ve ever decided to hold off eating to go food shopping, you know why. But hunger isn’t the only thing that can alter your spending habits. Many people are more likely to spend money when they are emotional as a compensation to make themselves feel better. While you can’t always control when you need to go shopping, try to hold off on your trip if you’re having a really bad day or are just really emotional. And always remember to eat a snack before heading into the grocery store.

Never buy a product simply because it’s on sale. If you can get virtually the same product for a lower price tag, go ahead and do it. But if you never buy frozen dinners, don’t buy one just because it’s on sale. You end up leaving with a lot more than you meant and increase your spending.

Buy only what you need, especially if it’s perishable. Often, stores offer sales only if you buy larger amounts of a product. Sure you get each one cheaper, but you end up spending more money in the end. And if the item is perishable, it may end up going to waste. If the item isn’t perishable, you still need to look at how the extra purchase will affect your budget. Saving a few dollars may not be worth it if you have to go without something else you really need or overdraft your checking account.

Also, take a closer look at the policies of the stores you shop at. Stores like Wal-mart may put up at “2 for $10″, but if you only buy one, you still get the $5 price tag.

Prioritize. Occasionally, even people on a budget can spoil themselves with little treats or even a large splurge, the key is not doing it all the time so you can stay within your budget. Make a list of all your expenses and prioritize them based on your wants and needs. Take care of each need in order. If you have money to spoil yourself when you get near the bottom of the list, then you know you can afford an extra purchase. Just remember to include a savings account near the top of your list in case of emergencies.

By watching yourself and using a little control, you can keep yourself from going overboard.

If you ask someone whether or not they want to be in debt, you’re probably never going to hear them say no. Everyone wants to live within their means, but when it comes to actually doing it, it can be a little more difficult.

The first thing you need to do to live on a budget is to set one. Follow these simple steps to get started.

- Make a list of everything you spend money one.
- Prioritize your list from most important to least important.
- Track your current spending. The easiest way to do this is by using debit cards and looking at your statement. But you can also write how much you spend and what you bought whenever you make a purchase.
- Compare your current spending to your budget to see what you can cut out ($5 for a cup of coffee?) and what you need to keep.
- Set a realistic number to spend on the high priorities on the list based on current spending
- If your total budget is still above what you have available, research ways to lower the important costs, like lowering interest rates on loans, being more energy efficient, and buying lower priced items.

Have a “fun stuff” account. You may think that you’re going to cut back completely: not go out to eat at all, not go to the movies, not take vacations, but that’s not realistic at all. Eventually you’ll probably break down and spend way too much on something you didn’t need because you’re so stressed out from not having any fun. Instead, figure out how much you can afford to “blow” on fun things and put it aside. You can have a schedule, like “we can go out once a month” or you can do occasional small things and save up to a larger vacation or large purchase.

Remember that savings is just as important as paying off debt. Imagine you’ve worked and worked and finally paid down your debt. Then you have a major accident or lose your job and are immediately back into debt and back in trouble. Try to set aside some savings to keep yourself protected in case of severe problems in the future.

Don’t forget to budget for the unexpected. None of us want a car tire to blow or a doctor’s visit but these are things that happen time and time again. If you’re budgeting every penny, don’t forget to factor in the things that can’t be specifically budgeted for. If you budget and nothing comes up, you can put the money in savings to be used to a later surprise expense. The more you can keep in savings, the safer you are.
While living on a budget is an ideal thing, many of us have failed repeatedly when we try to do it. The key is figuring out what budget works for you.

If you’ve hit crisis mode, sometimes you can’t worry about reducing your debt or increasing your savings. If you’re in a true crisis you just need a new way to make extra money fast. Whether it’s to buy food for your family or keep your utilities on. Here are some fast, easy, and legal ways to make some quick cash. They’re not going to get you rich, but they may just help you get by.

Sell your stuff. Most of us have spare stuff lying around that we don’t need or could live without. You can have a garage sale, or use a more modern technique. The internet is a powerful tool to sell your unwanted items for more money using online marketplaces like EBay or Craigslist. If you have a talent for making things, you can sell those as well.

Get a second job. If you have some extra time, you can use that to get a job to make some extra cash quick. There are several good options for making money fast.

- Temp agencies. They can often find you work quickly, and if you’re fairly competent, the people you’re working for will be more than grateful that you’re there. They generally pay right when the work is done, and if you do well you may get hired on permanently.
- Work online. If you have a service you can offer such as virtual assistance or content writing you may be able to freelance your services online. You’ll need a simple website and the will and hard work to find a few clients fast.
- Odd jobs. If you’re watching your kids, you can offer to babysit for others at the same time. If you’re handy, offer to help people do basic house, lawn, or car maintenance. There are plenty of easy jobs people just don’t want to do themselves. Try handing out flyers around the neighborhood or let the people you talk to know you’re available for work.
- A job that pays tips. If you need money fast, find a job that pays right away in tips. Serving food, bartending, and being a valet are all great options.

Medical Research. While it probably sounds like an episode of a TV sitcom, there are pharmaceutical and medical research companies all over who will pay you so they can do medical research. This is obviously a personal choice, but is a great way to make some money if you qualify. If you don’t want to do research, you can also donate plasma to make quick cash.

Find donated products and services. If you are in a true bind, you may be able to find people who will donate food, products, and services to your family. You can talk to utility companies, churches, and other organizations. If they can donate services, that will free up cash for you to use.

Take in a boarder. Do you have a spare room or a finished basement you’re not using? You can advertise to find a boarder to live in your house. If you’re worried about taking in a stranger, ask your friends if they know anyone looking for an inexpensive place to live. You can help someone else out by helping yourself.

Cash out. If you’re really desperate for money, you can cash out whole life insurance or take money early from your retirement plan. Just remember that what you take now you’ll probably miss later. Also be aware of penalties you face for cashing out of your 401k now.

Every day you see and hear ads about reducing your debt. They don’t make you feel better. They just remind you of the debt you have. But what can you really do? Who can you really trust? Here is a step by step guide to reducing your debt. It won’t happen overnight, but if you make the effort, you’ll be able to get your debt down until it’s gone.

Step 1. Decrease Debt
The most advertised form of debt reduction are companies that will work with your credit card companies and loan agencies to reduce the amount you owe and then usually consolidate that into one payment. This makes it simple and easy to pay off debt faster.

The problem with these debt consolidation and debt reduction organizations is that not only do they cost money themselves; they can also severely damage your credit rating.

Another option is a debt consolidation loan. This is a loan a bank or credit union may give you to help pay off a variety of loans. In addition to giving you one simple bill to pay, you can often get a lower interest percentage on this loan. You owe the same amount, but will end up paying a lot less in interest.

If you can’t get a debt consolidation loan, you can do the work yourself to pay lower interest. Start by contacting your creditors and finding out exactly what your interest rate is and if it would be possible to get it lowered. Also ask them if they have any balance transfer offers available.

Next figure out which cards have the lowest interest rates or can give you the lowest rates by transferring balances. Put as much debt as you can into the card with the lowest rate. Just be careful, often the balance transfer rates only last for a limited time if the balance isn’t paid.

Step 2. Decrease Spending
Once you’ve got the amount you need to pay decrease, you still need to have the money to spend it (and of course, not create more debt). That means you need to find ways to spend less money. Here are some great quick tips for decreasing how much you spend.

* Track your spending. Once you know what you’re spending your money on, you’ll often be able to easily point out things you can cut.

* Use less energy. Take shorter showers, walk rather than drive, and turn your thermostat down a few degrees. Little changes will add up when it comes to your bills.

* Prioritize. Figure out what bills are the most important and try to figure out things that are less important to you that you can cut your spending on.

Step 3. Pay your debt down smart
If might seem like a good idea to pay off all your debts at the same time, but this can end up costing you more money in interest payments. In step 1 you figured out exactly what interest rates you have on each account. Pay minimum payments on all but one of your cards. Pay off as much as you can each month on the card with the highest interest rate. Once you’ve paid that card off, take the money you would have paid on that one and apply it to the next highest card.

If you follow these three easy steps, you should start to see a reduction in your debt immediately. The more you work at them, the more you can get your debt to go down.

Is your debt piling up? Do you keep owing more and feel like you’ll never get out of debt? You can get out of your debt. It’s simply a matter of taking control of your debt, instead of letting it control you.

You see commercials all the time for companies that will help eliminate your debt in a few years or even month’s time. Many of these companies can help you, but many of them are simply scams. The key is spotting which one can help and which ones you should pass up. The easiest way to tell is if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Even if they can help you slash your debt, and effective program will also require you to look at your spending and severely slash it.

The first step is decreasing your spending and living on a reasonable budget. While many people try to tackle this alone, there is help if you need it.

Credit counselors are people you talk with about your finances. They can help you identify ways you can save, help you set up a budget, and help you develop a debt repayment plan that works for you. They don’t do anything to decrease the amount you owe; they just help you figure out how to pay it.

If your debt is piling up, especially if you have high interest loans, you may be able to lower your payments and get rid of your debt faster without harming your credit score too much by getting a debt consolidation loan. This is a loan that you can use to pay off all your high interest debt. The benefit is that you only have to keep track of one payment, and you can often get a lower payment by getting a lower interest rate or a longer term for payoff.

This is really only a feasible option if you haven’t gotten yourself into a lot of debt trouble yet. If you have a poor credit history, you’re unlikely to be able to get the loan. You may also be able to refinance larger loans and even get a home equity loan that will pay off your credit cards and tie it in with your mortgage.

If you are really in trouble, but don’t want to declare bankruptcy, then debt negotiations might be your best bet. These companies talk to the credit card companies for you and work to decrease your debt amount and interest rates. This will get you out of debt faster, but will affect your credit rating.

A debt management plan is sort of like a “combo deal” between the two previous options. You give the debt manager money for all your bills and they pay your creditors. That way you only have one payment, but they also try to talk to your creditors and negotiate a lower debt. You will obviously have to pay them, but this also doesn’t hurt your credit store too badly.

If you don’t want to rely on other people to help you, you can try contacting the people you owe personally. The key to talking to these companies is making it clear that you cannot pay your debt and if they don’t work something out with you, they likely won’t get any money.

We all tend to spend more than we should. But you don’t have to go without to stay within your budget. Here are some easy tips that will help cut down your expenses and stay within your budget.

Make it yourself. Most things are cheaper if you make it yourself rather than buying. You can make anything from food to cleaning products to face wash. Just do a quick Google search to find tons of recipes.

Clip coupons. Not only can you find them in newspapers and magazines, now you can find them online on coupon sites and even from the manufacturer. The best part is that you usually don’t have to sift through hundreds of coupons to find the one’s you’re looking for. If you look hard enough, you can also find all kinds of freebies to try too.

Do entertainment on a budget. If you like reading and watching movies, you can get a library card and check them out for free instead of buying them or going out to a theater. If you want better options, you can try used book stores (and sell the books back) or use Redbox for your movies (just remember to return them quickly).

Pay bills online. This will not only save you money one stamps and checks, but it will also help you pay your bills on time to avoid needless late fees.

Make a list. When you go shopping make a list of what you need and don’t deviate. This will keep you buying only what you need. And if you do forget things, don’t pick them at a convenience store, you’ll end up paying a much higher price tag.

Use store brands. What’s the difference between these and the top brands? – Fancy packaging and expensive marketing campaigns in most cases. Store brands are usually similar products, if not EXACTLY the same. Save yourself some money by looking around instead of grabbing the products you know.

Don’t let food go bad. Most people throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food every year because they let it rot. Instead of eating a frozen or canned food that will keep, eat the food that will spoil soon first.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. It’s not only good for the environment; it can also save you money. Look around your house for things you can use rather than throw away, ways you can cut back on your energy bills, and things you can get paid to recycle. Everything from turning down the thermostat to planning your errands ahead so you use less gas. It may only be a little bit of money, but it all adds up to big savings.

Use less. Products like cleaners, hair products, toothpaste, soap, and anything that you can dispense too much of are easy to overuse. Experiment with how much you really need to use for it to work. When things last longer, you save money.

Do it yourself. If you’d normally pay someone else to do something for you, look into doing it yourself. Doing small things on your own, like changing the oil in your car, can save you money over time.

Make saving a game. Every time you see go to the grocery store or open your bills, make saving a game. See how much you can save each time and work to save more and more. This makes it a fun competition and keeps you saving.

While excessive spending can use up a lot of your money, often the answer to your money problems is closer to home. Many people are spending way more on their bills than they need to be. Here are some ways to cut your everyday bills and save money every month.

Conserve energy. The world is rapidly approaching a global energy crisis. If we don’t conserve, eventually, we will run out. The good news, helping conserve is not only easy; it will also help drastically cut your energy bills. Here are a few quick and easy ways to make your home energy bills a lot easier to handle.

* Watch your water usage. Turn off faucets when you’re brushing your teeth or even when you’re washing your hair and lathering up in the shower. You can also conserve water by always doing full loads in the washer or dishwasher.

* Use power strips. Any electronic device that uses a remote control is using energy even if it’s off. That’s because it has to power the remote sensor, so it’s always sitting and waiting for you to tell it to turn on. Instead, plug your remote controlled items into a power strip and turn it off when you’re not using them.

* Turn things off! Your mom always told you to turn the lights off when you leave a room. Really, running a light bulb doesn’t use that much energy. Running TV’s, VCR’s, computers, and video games systems do though. If you’re not using them, make sure they’re off.

* Use less heat or cold. Whether it’s heating the air, heating your water, or even refrigerating your food; making heat or cold uses A LOT of excess energy. Try turning down your thermostat or fridge, taking slightly colder showers, and washing clothes in colder water. You’ll probably find a big drop in your bills from small changes.

Next time you go to pay your bills, take a look at more than just the total amount you need to pay. Many companies get you started by giving you free or deeply discounted extras that we forget to get rid of when the offer goes away.

Do you really need that digital cable or call waiting? Do you ever use that internet on your phone or the roadside assistance on your car insurance? While these are normally small charges, getting rid of them can add up to big savings.

Once you’ve cut as much excess out of your bills as you think you can, start shopping around. It used to be you have one choice for TV, once choice for phone provider, and pretty much one choice for everything, but that’s no longer the case. And since there’s so much competition, even though many companies have very similar costs, you can often save a lot of money by switching (think about all those car insurance commercials you’ve seen!). This is because they offer deep discounts to new customers in order to get their business.

Just because you want to cut bills doesn’t mean you have to switch companies either. I recently switched off my parents cell phone plan onto another plan. Same minutes, same features, same company, almost half the cost. And I got a free phone for switching! The reason? The plan I was switching to had a newer contract. Renegotiating your contract when you re-up can help you get in on that “new customer” savings.

The key to lowering your bills is making lots of small easy changes that add up to big savings.

It’s becoming more and more common for people to have a two (or even three) income household. We live with the idea that a one-income household is antiquated and unrealistic, but that’s not true. If you want to stay at home, you can make it happen. It just takes planning, motivation, and a bit of creative thinking.

If you’re currently a two income family and are looking to make a move to one-income, start making changes now, not later. Instead of spending all you have now, stock it away in a savings accounts or other options with higher pay-outs. That way you’ll not only have a cushion when you make the change, you’ll also already be used to spending less money and will have to make smaller adjustments to adapt to your new income.

Use your new situation to become a savings expert. Sure, being a stay at home mom or dad is a full time job, but the change of location can help you fit in some money saving activities you may not have been able to do before. Sure, you can do the normal activities like researching new ways to cut energy costs and use up every last bit of what you have, but there are other things you can do (and even include the kids) that will save even more money.

* Make your own household products including soap, baby food, cleaners, and beauty products.
* Search for coupons and freebies in your local papers and online.
* Grow your own vegetables and spices.
* Make products to sell. While most people have heard of ebay by now, there are new options that can get your products even more exposure.

When you make the move to one-income, plan for some costs that are going to rise with someone being at home all day long. Utilities will likely rise because you’ll be using more heat and other utilities. However, some of this might be compensated for by decreased costs like less eating out for lunch and gas for travel.

Don’t keep up with the Jones’s. If you’re making the decision to be a one-income family, you must understand that you can’t financially keep up with two-income families. You may have to settle for buying and older or smaller house, keeping cars longer or buying them used, and forgoing big fancy vacations.

While it may take some extra work and you might have to live without some things you had before, it’s important to keep in mind the benefits you’re getting by staying home. The extra moments you’ll have with your family and the extra care you can give them are well worth the effort. Those are the things that made you make the decision in the first place.

Most people have some debt they owe. But wanting to get rid of debt is not the same as being in a debt crisis. If you are in danger or losing your possessions or declaring bankruptcy, it’s time to take emergency action to get yourself out of trouble.

You can start by drastically cutting unneeded expenses. Start by making a detailed budget for your spending. When you first make your budget, it’s probably going to add up to a lot more than you can afford. That’s when you need to start making cuts. Look at the items of your budget and figure out whether you really need what you’re spending money on. When it comes to a crisis state, extras like cable and eating out are probably going to have to go.

Once you’ve removed all the items you don’t need, then cut down your bills on the things you do. Work on cutting your energy bills, carpooling, or walking to save on gas. You can also cut out unneeded parts of needed bills like extras on your phone plan.

Next, return things you can’t afford. Many people reach a budget crisis because they were living outside their means. Often, this can be somewhat reversed. If you’ve made recent purchases you don’t need, try to return them to the store. If you can’t return the things you don’t need, you can sell them in a garage sale or on Craigslist.

You can call debtors and ask them to reduce your debt. Most people consider this a futile effort. The debtor doesn’t care about your problems, why would they work to make things easier on you? Simple, less money is better than no money. They may not be willing to lower your total debt, but you may be able to negotiate a lower interest rate or even have them temporarily stop adding interest until your finances improve.

Before you pick up the phone to talk to credit card companies, be prepared. You can find all kinds of resources for how to talk to creditors. They know what they’re doing, you don’t. If you’re uncomfortable talking to them yourself, there are agencies that can do this for you.

If you’ve worked out everything you can and still can’t make ends meet, you probably want to look into getting another job. Even if you don’t have a lot of free time, you can often find easy work on the internet or pick up odd jobs for your neighbors.

Don’t forget to save money. When you’re barely making ends meet, you’re not thinking about putting money into savings. But if you’re barely making ends meet now, imagine what will happen if you lose your job, face legal action, or have a medical crisis. Even a small amount of savings can keep your out of bankruptcy.

When everything else fails, get help. If you’ve tried everything above and nothing’s working, it’s time to get help. For whatever reason, many of us don’t want to see help from others, but when it comes down to your livelihood, sometimes it’s your only option. Utility companies, charities, churches, and various other organizations are willing to help you if you ask for it.
